The Canal is Doomed

“The Chillicothe Gazette has the following of interest:”

“The conditions at the state dam have been greatly aggravated by the rise in the Scioto river on Saturday, which washed out 300 feet of the tow path of the canal below the dam. The attention of the board of public works had been called to this matter and ways and means suggested to avoid the result, which was almost certain, but the board preferred not to take any action in the matter, in view of the short appropriations.”

“The attitude of the board is taken to more and more indicate that no more money will be spent on this division of the Ohio canal and that it will be allowed to lapse into a common abandoned ditch. Whether this is really the future of the canal is not definitely known, but the non-action of the board certainly presages abandonment.”

“With the state dam washed so that at least $6,000 will be needed to repair it, and 300 feet of tow path washed away, the expense of fixing up this one point in the canal will almost approximate $10,000, and that is almost all of the appropriation for the year, while next year there is no appropriation.”1
