Climbing to Feurt Cemetery — Green Township, Scioto County, Ohio (2025 Visit)

In October 2025, we returned to Feurt Cemetery in Green Township, Scioto County — our first visit since 2019. The small hillside cemetery, east of Franklin Furnace and U.S. Route 52, was once accessible by old farm roads that are now long reclaimed by nature. What was described in 1980 as “in excellent shape” has since fallen into benign neglect. Fencing is gone, stones lean or are missing, and the forest continues its slow takeover.

The cemetery was active from 1832 through 1909, likely closing to new burials before the 20th century. Despite its condition, it remains a site of historical importance as the burial place of Francis Feurt, a Veteran of the American Revolution. Our visit was part of the ongoing America 250 Ohio initiative, which seeks to locate and document every known burial of Revolutionary War veterans within the state.

We parked along the westbound berm of U.S. 52 and made the climb up the steep hillside — at times on hands and knees — to reach the cemetery plateau. The footage from this visit was captured using an Insta360 X3, later reframed to show the terrain and difficulty of access that defines many of these older, forgotten cemeteries.

Even in its overgrown and neglected state, Feurt Cemetery remains a quiet tribute to the families and early settlers of southern Ohio. Our hope is that renewed attention through the America 250 Ohio Project will lead to preservation and restoration of this historic ground.
