Cemetery Location Description:
John M. McConnell moved from Pennsylvania to Greenupsburg (today known as Greenup) in 1813. During his time there he maintained a legal practice and served in Kentucky House from 1822 until 1825. Between 1826 and 1830 he served in the Kentucky Senate. In 1831 he purchased 250 acres of land to which he built a Greek Revival-style home, another brick building for his legal practice, a windmill, and several outbuildings. The McConnell residence is currently listed on the National Registry of Historic Places.
When John M McConnell died he wished to be buried on a hill so that he could view his property. His wish was granted and he, his wife and several other graves are the hill about 3/4 mile SSW from the McConnell House located in Wurtland, Kentucky.
