“Uriah Slack died Wednesday at his home on East Eleventh street, after a long illness. He was sixty-four years and six months old. His wife1, one son, one daughter and several step-children, besides many relatives and friends mourn his loss. He was a good man, and a kind and loving husband and father. He was an earnest Christian.”
“Mr. Slack was born in Portsmouth in 1837, on West Second street, in the house that stood where Cross’ blacksmith shop now stands. When two years old, his parents, Samuel and Mary Slack, bought a farm on Dogwood Ridge and moved there. Inheriting the farm Mr. Slack managed it until a few years ago, when he sold it and came to Portsmouth, where he has since resided. Mr. Slack’s grandparents were among the pioneer settlers of Portsmouth. They were Abraham and Susan Slack and they came to Portsmouth from Bucks county, Pennsylvania., in 1812, and bought property on West Second street. A sister of the deceased, Mrs. Sarah McDowell lives here, and a brother.”
“The remains will be taken to Waits Station Friday morning for interment.”2
