“Mrs. Jacob Berndt died at one o’clock this morning at her late home, 819 Court street. Her death was due to the infirmities of old age and was not unexpected, as she had been in very poor health for months.”
“Her maiden name was Eva Margaret Gartner, and she was born in Sandhofen, near Mannheim, Germany, January 18, 1828. She came to this country in 1851 and with her parents settled in this city, where she spent the greater part of her life. Shortly after coming here she was married to Peter Christ, who died in 1883. In 1888 she was married to Jacob Berndt, who had previously been married twice, and he survives her.”
“No children were born of either union and the end of the poor woman’s life was saddened by troubles that came to her at the close of a long life. She leaves a nephew, Peter Gartner, a painter of this city, and one niece, who lives in the West.”
“The funeral services will take place Thursday afternoon from her late home and will be conducted by Reverend H. DeBeer.”
