Matriarch of Greenup Clay Legacy Passes at 72

Mrs. Elizabeth A. Lakeman died at her home on Ninth street, below Chillicothe, Wednesday evening at 6 o’clock, of paralysis, aged 72 years. Her husband was John W. Lakeman, who died in Greenup county, Kentucky., twenty-five years ago. Her maiden name was Roberts, and she was born in Charlotte county, East Virginia, April 23, 1818. Twelve children were born to them, nine of whom are living including Alex, W. of the Johnson Hub and Spoke Factory, Mrs. Carrie McCloud, Mrs. Frank White, Mrs. Aaron Clark1 and Miss Mary J. Lakeman, all of this city, and several brothers and sisters living at other places.”

“Deceased was a member of the Methodist Church. The funeral took place yesterday afternoon at Bennet’s Chapel, Kentucky, and the interment was at the cemetery near by.”

“Deceased’s husband will be remembered as John W. Lakeman, who lived in Greenup county, near the city, and owned the property where the Tynes Fire Clay banks are located. He was a highly respected citizen, and died with good prospects of a competency before him from the development of the fire clay industry.”2
