Fatal Collision on the Wabash: Death of Walter S. Mann

“Last Wednesday evening a collision occurred on the Western Division of the Wabash Railroad, ten miles west of St. Louis, between a passenger and freight train, in which Walter S. Mann, conductor of the passenger train, and William Stuart, the freight engineer, were instantly killed. Mr. Mann was the husband of Miss Ida Maddock, sister of John and Charles Maddock and Mrs. C. A. Barton1. The bereaved wife is well known in this city, where she was born and raised. Enoch J. Salt received a telegram the same night, announcing the sad occurrence, and telegraphed back for particulars. Mrs. Mann telegraphed that the remains would first be taken to Jeffersonville, Indiana., the former home of deceased, and then brought here for burial. They will probably arrive here tomorrow morning.”2
