Removing Bodies from Chillicothe’s Old Presbyterian Graveyard

“On Tuesday last Col. Underwood, on behalf of the Scioto Valley Railway Company, commenced the work of clearing off the old Presbyterian graveyard. The first thing to do was to remove the fences and open the route of the road from Second to Main.”

“The removal of the bodies is being conducted under the especial supervision of Col. Underwood, and he is anxious that all those wishing to remove the bodies of relatives, or to direct what shall be done with bodies removed by the company’s agents, will come promptly forward and give directions as to the places of removal selected. Many are being taken to the township cemetery, others to cemetery hill, and the public will understand that the company propose to bear the expense of taking up, boxing, removing and reinterring all the bodies contained in the lot.”

“The entire piece of ground is to be leveled down even with the street on either side, and a handsome new passenger depot and freight house will be immediately erected. It is also the intention of the company to transform the Pratt lot, on Water street, into suitable yards, and to erect a number of coal chutes on the line of the road.— Chillicothe Register.”1
