The Sudden Death of CS Kelley

CS Kelley1, the Ninth street grocer, died rather suddenly at his residence in the Sixth Ward, last Saturday morning, in his 50th year. While attending the US Courts of Cincinnati as a witness two weeks ago, he became quite ill, but did not take his bed until the day preceding his death, at which time medical aid was summoned but unavailingly. The deceased was a son of Charles Kelley, and was born March 28, 1829, at Kelley’s Mills, in Lawrence county. He came to Portsmouth in 1872, and established a grocery on Ninth street, purchasing a house and lot from Isaac F. Mead. Of a family of nine children, of the father of the deceased, but two survive, General Kelley23 of Lawrence county and Colonel Kelley4 of Illinois.”

“Prior to the removal of CS Kelley to this place he acceptably held several positions of trust in Lawrence county. He was, at the time of his death, an active member of the Baptist Church. The remains were interred in the family burying ground near Kelley’s Mills, last Sunday afternoon. His wife and three children survive him.”5
