Old Homestead of General Kendall for Sale

“The ‘Old Homestead of General Kendall,’ situate one mile from Portsmouth, is for sale, and can be purchased low, and on easy terms. This is a very handsome country residence. There are twenty-three acres of level land, every acre of which is fit for garden purposes. The dwelling house is well-arranged, and consists of eight large rooms. The beauty of this place, and the scenery surrounding it, make it a very desirable residence. There is, within one hundred yards of the house, a large and beautiful mound, one of those singular ancient earthworks which are found in abundance in Southern Ohio, and about which there has been so much speculation and conjecture by antiquarians. This mound is about one hundred feet in diameter at the base, and running up to a point, with an even slope, to the height of about fifty feet, and is covered with handsome forest trees. There is also on the place, within ten steps of the dwelling, an excellent spring, being from the same source as the spring as the ‘Lawson Homestead,’ now occupied by Mr. Bentley. This spring was never known to go dry, and furnishes water enough to supply a whole village. Lawson’s run crosses a portion of the land, and furnishes water in abundance for stock. Persons who wish to buy land for gardening purposes, or for country residences, who do not wish to purchase the whole premises cab be accommodated with lots to suit themselves. Owing to this place being so near the market, and the fertility of the soil, and other beauties and conveniences before names, it is the best and most beautiful garden farm in Scioto County. And, aside from the garden business, which could be lucratively carried on here, any person who understands the business, can, by a little attention, convert this place into a Public Garden, or place of holiday resort, that will make a profitable business.”

“There is also for sale a large, handsome lot, 120 feet front by 350 feet depp, containing one acre, east of, and adjoining the residence of John Cook, in the city of Portsmouth. This lot, and the premises before described, can be purchases by paying part down, and the balance in deferred payments, to suit the purchasers.”
