“Mary Lou Buckle, five year old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jesse Buckle of Swauger Valley, died at 11:40 PM Thursday in Mercy hospital of burns which she sustained when her clothing caught fire while she was playing Thursday afternoon. Her body was severely burned and she was also burned about the face, hands and legs. Her clothing caught fire from matches with which the child was playing.”

“Mary Lou and her brothers and sisters had been left in the care of their older sister, Mrs. Mildred Anderson, while their parents visited relatives in West Virginia. Thursday afternoon the children were playing in an old log cabin across the road from their home. They had gotten hold of some matches and in some manner Mary Lou’s clothes were ignited. Her clothing was a mass of flames when Mrs. Anderson reached her and put her in a tub of water, which was close by. Dr. JW Hutchens was called and gave first aid. The child was removed to Mercy hospital and died a few hours later.”
“Mr. and Mrs. Buckle had been in West Virginia visiting since last Tuesday and were notified of the child’s accident. They arrived in the city two hours after their daughter had died. Mary Lou is survived by her parents and the following sisters and brothers: Mrs. Anderson, Dorothy, Geneva, Jesse Jr., Winona, Paul, Merle, Lila Lee at home.”
“Funeral services will probably be held Sunday. The body was removed from the Hacquard funeral home in the residence today.”1
