A Virtual Tour of Squire-Kallner Cemetery

Nestled in Madison Township, Scioto County, Ohio, Squire-Kallner Cemetery is a historical gem that we recently had the pleasure of visiting. This active cemetery, spanning approximately 1.5 acres, offers a unique glimpse into the past with burials dating back to 1815. Maintained by the Madison Township trustees, the cemetery is a testament to the rich history of the area.

During our visit, we were struck by the various preservation efforts that have been undertaken over the years. The headstones, in different states of repair, tell stories of the families and individuals who once lived here. The earliest recorded burial is from 1815, and many headstones from the 1800s are typical marble markers, some reset in concrete.

We noticed clusters of family plots, like those of the Squires, Kirks, and McDowell families. These markers often provide detailed genealogical information, giving us a deeper understanding of the people buried here. Among these are the graves of military veterans, including those who served in the Ohio Heavy Artillery, adding a layer of solemn respect to our visit.

The cemetery is home to various styles of headstones, each with its unique charm. From slotted bases to intricate carvings of willow trees and obelisks, the designs reflect the 19th-century trends and the craftsmanship of the time. However, maintaining these old markers is not without challenges. Weathering, breakage, and the effects of soft soil have taken their toll on many of the headstones.

A crucial point we learned during our visit is the prohibition on using chalk or other substances to make inscriptions more readable. Instead, non-invasive methods like using mirrors for better visibility are advocated, ensuring we preserve the integrity of these historical markers.

The headstones also provide historical context, with some indicating ties to significant events such as the American Revolution and the influenza outbreak at the end of World War I. These markers serve as a poignant reminder of the cemetery’s deep-rooted history.
