“It required a jury in Judge Blair’s court just forty minutes Thursday morning, to bring in a verdict of guilty in the paternity case of Lucille Liming against James Piatt. The trial started late Wednesday and was resumed at the opening of court Thursday morning. The complainant went on the stand and named the defendant as the father of her child, born in April, last. She declared that Piatt had promised to marry her after accomplishing her ruin and that he had offered her $50 to not further prosecute the case.”
“In this the plaintiff was borne out by the testimony of her younger sister, Carrie Liming. The defense attempted to show that in statements alleged to have been made by Miss Liming to William Simpler and wife, that she would fasten the blame of her ruin on some man who had money. The Simplers, who now live in Covington, shared the apartments of William Morris, Market street barber, for whom the Liming girl has been housekeeper, since last September. The attorneys were Theo. K. Funk, opposed by RC Myers and George W. Sheppard and the case was hotly contested throughout.”
‘The testimony in spots was exceedingly racy. Notice of a new trial was given.”1
