A Watch is Causing Charley Burns Plenty of Trouble

“There has been quite a commotion in certain circles during the past few days over the disappearance of a watch.”

“It appears that the watch originally belonged to a young lady named Roberts, who is employed as a domestic in the family of TM Patterson, on East Ninth street. Miss Roberts gave the watch to her ‘steady,’ Charles Burns, for him to wear a few days. She went to Cincinnati on a visit, and while she was gone Burns gave the watch to a prominent young man of the city to whom he was indebted. The young man sold the watch to John Blair, of the West Side, and kept the money. When the owner of the watch came back and found she had ‘lost out’ by the deal, she was furious and called in the aid of the police to recover her property.”

“Mr. Burns did not have either the watch or the cash to redeem it, and the prominent young man did not like to put up the money. John Blair would not give up the watch unless he got his money back. In this condition, Marshall Schmitt gave the parties until Saturday night to return the watch to the owner. If this is not done, the whole ‘push’ including the prominent young man, will be arrested.”1
