“Greenup County sheriff’s authorities on a liquor raid Saturday were told the stork was expected at any moment at the home of a suspect.”

“But the stork apparently left a strangle bundle- two gallons of moonshine whisky.”

Sheriff Beckham Montgomery, conducting raids at Raccoon Hill on Route 2, was refused admittance to the farm home of William Skaggs, 45. On presentation of a warrant, Montgomery was allowed to enter, but Mrs. Skaggs1 in bed, warned she was pregnant and ready to give birth.”

Deputy Howard Stevens stayed at the home while the Sheriff went to the barn for Mr. Skaggs.”

“When the Sheriff returned, the woman apparently became violently ill.”

“One of the raiding officers lifted the blanket off the ailing woman and discovered her trouble was not with pregnancy. Roger Crouch, alcohol and tobacco tax Agent, said, ‘Here’s our baby’ as he uncovered two gallons of moonshine whisky.”

“Also found at the home were seven pints and four half-pints of moonshine, and three cases and 14 bottles of beer.”

“Raiding officers reported they found 27 bottles and 13 cans of beer and about two gallons of moonshine at the home of Johnny Kilburn, 40, who lives within 100 yards of Skaggs on Raccoon Hill.”

“Both Skaggs and Kilburn will be arraigned before US Commissioner Thomas Burchett Jr., on charges of possessing and selling untax-paid alcohol.”

“Other officers participating in the raid were Tax Agent Carl Beatty and Deputy Sheriffs Lynn Stephenson, Paul Kinner, Howard Stevens and Jim Brown.”

“Sheriff Montgomery said Mrs. Kilburn2 will be charged with possessing and selling, but was not placed under arrest.”3
