“Eugene Hacquard, the well-known gunsmith, died of grip Sunday, at his home, 169 West Front street. He was born in France April 1st, 1833, and with his parents and family came to America and directly to Portsmouth 1848, where he spent his life. His mother died here, but his father returned to his native land and died there. Shortly after coming to this city Mr. Hacquard was apprenticed to the late Valentine Gahr, with whom he learned the trade of gunsmith. Later he, together with the late HD Ziegler1, bought the business and conducted it for many years at 175 West Second street. He was married in this city in February 1850 to Miss Fannie Fullmer, who with six children, survives, Edward, George, Mrs. Charles Wordwell2, of Canton, Louis, Florence, and Mrs. Oscar Finney3, of El Paso, Texas. Charles and William died within the past few years. For the past nineteen years deceased has been in business at 169 West Front street. The funeral will take place Wednesday at 9 AM from the church of the Holy Redeemer.”4
