“Portsmouth is to have another shoe factory. That much has been definitely settled. The company has been in process of organization for several months. Dr. Tremper and Charles N. Franck are the prime movers in the new concern. The company was incorporated at Columbus Thursday. It will be known as the Portsmouth Shoe Manufacturing company. The capital stock will probably be in the neighborhood of $40,000. The incorporators are Frank Marting, Dr. Tremper, RH Hayman1, Dan Davis, JM Wendlekin2, Charles A. Row, John Elderkin, Charles N Franck, Otto Layher, and WA McFarlin3.”
“The company is still in embryo, but will probably be fully organized within the next few days.”
“The site of the new factory has not yet been fully determined upon. They have been negotiating with several parties for a building on the river front, and it has been definitely decided upon that the new factory will be on Front street. The offer made some months ago by Captain Skelton and others to induce the new factory to locate at new Boston in the property now used as a hotel, has been rejected. The factory will be on Front street.”
The stockholders in the new company are all experienced business men, and nearly all of them have been connected in some way with the shoe manufacturing business. They will begin business on a somewhat limited scale in view of the general depression of business in the shoe world. As times grow better they will enlarge, and hope to be able in a few years to stand in the front rank with the largest factories of the country.”
“Success to the new factory.”4Sure thing: the Portsmouth Shoe Manufacturing Co. Incorporated. (1895, June 29). Portsmouth Times, p. 1.
