William Thompson Finds Wife Dead in Bed

“The wife1 of William Thompson, a stone cutter, who lives at Otway, was found dead in her bed Tuesday morning. Enfolded in the icy clasp of the mother’s arms was their youngest child2 aged five months. It was peacefully sleeping in its innocence unmindful of the fact that death had severed its dearest tie during the night.”

“Mr. Thompson himself made the discovery of his wife’s death on going in to awaken her that morning. The night before she had partaken of a hearty supper, and before retiring appeared in the best of health and spirits.”

“She was about forty years of age, and lives at Carey’s Run. Mr. Thompson’s brother, Matt, was the man killed on the West Side road last fall. Besides the babe spoken of, four other young children are left motherless. The funeral was held Wednesday afternoon. No inquest was held, the physician having ascribed her death to heart failure.”3
