“James Murphy, age 57 years, a well-known Greenup county man, was killed by a fall of slate in the mines of the Main Island Creek Coal Company at Barnabus, West Virginia, several days ago. The remains arrived in Ironton and were intrerred in Lawrence cemetery. Reverend Sampson conducted the funeral. This is the third member of Murphy’s family to die a tragic death in the last three years, one of the present victim’s sons, Jethrow, having been shot when he attempted to act as peacemaker in a quarrel at Lawrence three years ago and another son, William, was killed while working in the N&W yards at Portsmouth, June 28, 1920.”
“Mr. Murphy is survived by his wife, Sarah and four daughters, Mrs. Hugh Nichols and Ada V. of Columbus, Irene of Racoon, Kentucky, and Lucy aged 10, at home.”1
