Sarah Kelly vs. Patrick Kelley

“Sarah Kelly vs. Patrick Kelley. Petition filed July 18, 1890. Petition alleges gross neglect and extreme cruelty and maltreatment, and that he has separated from her and no longer cohabits with her. The petition is for alimony, and not for divorce. Defendant denies in his answer all the allegations of the petition as to the cruelty and mistreatment, and further says that on the 18th of June, 1890, he date cited in the petition as an occasion of extreme cruelty on the defendant’s part, ‘he requested plaintiff in a gentlemanly manner to prepare dinner a little earlier than usual, plaintiff flew into a rage, and began to abuse defendant, cursing and swearing at him, calling him vile names, threatening to strike him, and finally did strike defendant a severe blow upon the eye, seriously injuring it.’ It is also alleged the ‘plaintiff’ is a large and powerful woman, much larger and stronger than defendant.’ So it seems that matters of prowess are not all on one side in the Kelley family. Judgement in the case was rendered substantially for the plaintiff, with custody of the minor children.”1
