“So intently was Crawford Shaw, aged 64, a barber, whose shop is located at 1019 Chillicothe street, watching Officer Barney Donley arrest a man near Tenth and Chillicothe streets at 7:30 Wednesday night, that Shaw failed to see the B&O SW1 mail train approaching, and it struck him and hurled him to the right of it.”

“When Shaw was picked up by William Isham, of 815 Tenth street, and Joseph McGlone, of 927 Chillicothe street, blood was pouring from a deep hole in his head, and apparently he was badly hurt. he was carried into his nearby shop and was attended by Dr. OR Micklethwait2. In addition to the hole cut in his head when the engine struck him, Shaw’s left knee was injured and he was hurt about the back, but not seriously.”

Mrs. James R Long3, of 913 Twelfth street, and Mrs. Wilburn Reeg4 of 730 Tenth street, were going down street and were eye-witnessess to the accident. They said that Shaw, whose hearing is defective, kept watching Officer Donley make an arrest and did not hear the approaching train until too late to prevent the accident. Mrs. Charles Slye5, of Chillicothe street, who was also near the scene of the accident, states last night that the train was moving slowly and that the engineer blew his whistle several time, but Shaw evidently failed to hear it.”

“The train was in charge of Engineer Robert Spangenberg and is known as the Portsmouth and Hamden accommodation. It is due here at 7:10 but arrived 20 minutes late.”

“Shaw was reported better this morning and Dr. Micklethwait says he will recover. He is well-known in the city, having for years conducted barber shops in various parts of the city.”6

“Crawford Shaw, Chillicothe street barber, who was struck by a B&O engine at Tenth and Chilliothe streets Wednesday evening has been removed to the Hempstead hospital. He was badly hurt about the hip and may be left a cripple as the pelvic bone, according to DR. OR Micklethwait, was broken in several places.”7

“Crawford Shaw, Chillicothe street barber, struck by a B&O SW train Wednesday evening, was taken from Hempstead hospital to Virgil Fowler’s X-ray officers at nine o’clock Saturday morning where an X-ray picture was taken of his injured hip.”8
