Enrollee Held in Camp Slaying

“Edward S. Gray, 33, colored CCC enrollee of Camp Roosevelt on Turkey Creek, was arrested on a charge of manslaughter late Monday and placed under a $1000 bond.”

“He is charged with the death of Earnest Gaskins, 39, colored World War veteran, who was wounded fatally Saturday night when he was struck over the head with a shovel. Gaskin was injured about 10 PM Saturday and died in Mercy hospital at 4 AM Monday.”

“Walter Pope, a material witness for the state, was placed under a $200 bind. The bonds were fixed by Judge Horace L. Small of municipal court and both men are held in Scioto County jail for failure to furnish bond.”

“Gray will be arraigned in municipal court at 10 AM Wednesday.”

“Camp officers said the altercation occurred during a dice game and was the climax of an argument over a money question.”

“A post-mortem examination Monday afternoon revealed that death resulted from a cerebral hemorrhage cause by a fracture of the left temporal region of the skull. Dr. Ross Moore Gault, county coroner, said the blow on the head caused the fracture and death of the victim. Lieutenant Leo R Markey, Dr. Dow Allard, and Dr. WE Gault assisted the coroner in the examination.”

“Gaskins body was moved to Steubenville this afternoon and funeral services will be held in that city. He is survived by an aunt, Mrs. Slorene Ray of Steubenville.”1
