Army to Use Scioto County Jail

“The Scioto County jail will be a bastille branch of Ft. Hayes, Columbus, for detaining apprehended soldiers who were absent without leave.”

“Major Henry H Miller, provost marshal of Ft. Hayes, made arrangements today with Sheriff Burl E. Justice to use the county jail as military police headquarters during December and January.”

“A detail of military police will arrive here Friday to set up the branch. All military prisoners apprehended in southern Ohio will be lodged in the county jail pending transfer to military jails.”

“The army will pay the county $1.25 a day per prisoner. Major Miller estimated between 25 and 30 men will be housed in the jail during a month.”

“The move is an economy measure of the army and will reduce transportation and gasoline expenses in moving prisoners, the officer said.”1
