Luther Rice, Gassed in World War, Called By Death

“Death Sunday morning at 9:15 o’clock claimed Luther Rice who made his home with his parents o a houseboat near York park. Death was caused by tuberculosis after more than a two years’ illness. Rice was a veteran of the World War and was gassed while serving Uncle Sam’s forces in France in 1918. Since his discharge from the army in 1919 he had been unable to work. He made a brave fight, being unwilling to give up and kept saying that he was going to get well, and it was only last Wednesday that he took to his bed.”

“Luther Rice was born in Catlettsburg, Kentucky, a son of John and Mary Rice1. He was 23 years of age May 24, last. All his life was spent in Catlettsburg until the time of the World War. He came here and worked in the Steel Plant a short time before enlisting in the regular army here in 1918. After a short training period in this country, he was sent overseas and served over there for nine months, being discharged from the service at Camp Sherman, May 17, 1919. One June 7, 1919, he was united in marriage to Miss Margaret Hammond of this city.:

Surviving are the widow, Mrs. Margaret Rice, his parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Rice, a sister, Mrs. Rose Foster of Coal Grove, and a brother, William Rice who is in the regular army and is now stationed in the Philippines. The deceased was a member of James Dickey Post, American Legion, of this city. The body has been removed to the home of the wife’s relatives, 410 Market street.”

“Funeral services will be held Tuesday morning at ten o’clock from the Legion club rooms, Gay and Seventh streets, with Chaplain WH Gleiser in charge of the last rites. All members of the American Legion are urged to attend. The Legion will furnish a firing squad. Burial will be in Greenlawn with military honors. 3
