“Jacob McDowell, 38, of Walsh, south of Fullerton, died in Portsmouth General hospital at 7:25 AM today of injuries suffered about 7 PM Sunday in an automobile accident.”
“Two companions, Cleve Miller and Ed Harr of Walsh, escaped with minor injuries.”
“Mr. Miller was owner and driver of the car. The trio was en route to Fullerton on the Tygart road when the machine skidded on loose gravel near the Art Swearingen residence.”
Victim Believed Crushed
“The small roadster left the highway, went into a ditch, overturned and rolled back onto the highway. It is believed Mr. McDowell was crushed under the car.”
“Morton’s ambulance moved Mr. McDowell to the hospital. Examination showed a broken neck, skull fracture and internal injuries. Relatives were informed immediately that the victim would not survive.”
“Mr. McDowell was a native of Elliott county, Kentucky, but the family located in Greenup county when he was a baby. He had been employed in the Portsmouth Refractories Company plant for several years.”
Funeral Rites Wednesday
Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Sarah McDowell of Akron; two children, Frieda, 12, and Juanita, 9; the parents, Mr. and Mrs. Joseph McDowell of Walsh, and the following brothers and sisters: Mrs. Joseph Sissell1 and Everett McDowell of Newberry, Michigan, Willie McDowell of Hulbert, Michigan; Mrs. Anna Payton, Mrs. Elizabeth Hunt and Rose, Walter, Charles, and Denver McDowell of Walsh.”
“Funeral services will be held at Bennett’s chapel Wednesday at 2 PM with Reverend AJ Spry of Letitia in charge. Burial will be in the chapel cemetery under the direction of Morton & Son.”2
