The discrepancy in the given name for Mr. Shepherd can possibly be explained by usage of the name “Mart” as a shortened version of Martin. This abbreviated name was most likely heard as the more common name Mark and that was the name that went to print. The surname Shepherd also has several variations that appear throughout records.
