The Obituary of Hettie Journey

Mrs. Hettie Ann Journey, 89, widow of Thomas A Journey, a Civil war veteran, died at 9:23 PM Sunday at the home of a daughter, Mrs. Dora Spence of Carey’s Run, with whom she had been living the past two years.”

“Mrs. Journey suffered a stroke of paralysis two years ago. Her condition had been serious the last four weeks. Mrs. Journey had been blind for three years.”

“She was born October 4, 1850, at Friendship, a daughter of Elijah and Susan Hodge Clifford. She had lived all her life on the West Side and was a member of Bethel Methodist church. Mrs. Journey was married to Mr. Journey 68 years ago and he preceded her in death on November 9, 1914.”

“Surviving are these children: Mrs. Spence at whose home she died, Mrs. Maggie Malone of Carey’s Run, Mrs. Rosa Gordon of Lucasville, Mrs. Alice Rinehart of Dayton and John Journey of Stony Run. Two sons, Walter and Harry Journey, preceded her in death. She also leaves 19 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren. Mrs. Journey was the last of a family of nine children.”

“Funeral services will be held at 2 PM Wednesday at Bethel Methodist church, with Reverend WB Moore officiating. Burial will be in Carey’s Run cemetery, under the direction of Windel-Howland. The body will be at the Spence residence until 1 PM Wednesday, when it will be taken to the church.”1
