The Flood of 1884 Ends a Name

“Jeremiah Collins, Jr., only son of the late Jerry Collins, died suddenly last Monday night. He had been exposed by the flood which probably hastened his death. He was in his 19th year. Father, mother, and son have died within two months! The funeral services were held at the church of the Holy Redeemer yesterday forenoon.1

Unfortunately, Jeremiah Jr. was familiar with tragedy, as was the entire family. In 1876 when Jeremiah Jr. was only eleven, he lost his older brother Dennis2 and his younger brother, William James3, and younger sister Bridget4. They were interred at the Catholic Cemetery now known as the Old Saint Mary’s Cemetery. The burial location of Mr. & Mrs. Jeremiah Collins and their son Jeremiah Collins Jr. is not currently known.
