1878: Charity McCowan Nearly 95

“Longevity. There is a lady living in Clay township, Scioto county, on the Munn’s Run road, over the divide, who will be 95 years of age the 14th of August next. It is Mrs. Charity McCowan, widow of the late David McCowan, who died at the age of 82. Mrs. McCowan lives with her son, Thomas Jefferson McCowan. she is a sprightly old lady, and looks as if she had many more years before her. Her great-grandfather, who was born in Germany, attained the advanced age of 103 years, and her great-grandfather, who was a native of New York, died in his 100th year. She came to this county, with her father, in 1816, locating in Portsmouth. Her son states that his grandfather, on his father’s side, who lived in Scotland, was impressed into the British army, and served in it during the Revolution. His grandfather, on his mother’s side, was a volunteer in the Colonial army, and served throughout the entire war without receiving a scratch. The family are of Democratic persuasion.”1
