Died Among Strangers

“Charles Lundley, a brakeman on a freight train drawn by Engine No. 12, Scioto Valley Railway, died last Wednesday morning at 2 o’clock, of typhoid fever, in this city, at the residence of William Johnson, engineer of Engine No. 10. Mr. Lundley was an industrious young man, the only support of his mother, residing near Ashland, Kentucky.”

“He was taken down with fever at his boarding house on Ninth street, but owing to the noise in that locality was removed to Mr. Johnson’s. The railroad men got up a purse, bough bed and bedding and other necessary articles at the time of his removal, and on the day of his death increased the purse and took charge of his funeral, sending the remains home by rail Thanksgiving Day.”

“Though among strangers, he had the kindest care and attention, the ladies joining in ministering to his needs.”1
