Greenup County Jail: Let ‘Er Burn

Greenup Citizens Did Not Try to Save the Jail

Hoped It Would Burn Down So a New One Could Be Built– Telegraphic News

Greenup, Kentucky, March 24
Several hundred dollars worth of damage was occasioned by a fire at the county jail early Monday morning. The building had long been an eyesore, and although several hundred people ran to the fire, no one could be found to take a turn at the hand pump fire engine. County Judge Bennett finally secured 20 men by promise of $20, and after hard work the structure was saved. The fire started on the inside, and the prisoners are thought to have been responsible. They had hard work to save themselves after they found out that the people on the outside were disinclined to attempt to save the building. 1
