“According to a message received from Russelville, Brown county, Luther R Jones, one of the best known citizens of the West Side, was killed there Monday afternoon. From advices received, Jones was helping out at a saw mill when a log rolled over him, causing his death in a short time. He had gone there recently to attend the funeral of a nephew.”
“The first message, which was directed to his only daughter, Mrs. Nora Briggs, wife of Aaron Briggs, of Dry Run, told briefly of the accident. About seven o’clock a telephone message was received at Higgins’ store, telling of his death. He had lived a little while after the accident. The message stated that the remains would be sent to Portsmouth on the N&W train, from Cincinnati Tuesday night.”
“Mr. Jones was 60 years of age, and a farmer by occupation, but owing to his crippled condition was unable to do much work. He was a familiar figure on Market street and enjoyed a wide acquaintance. He was quite active as a Democratic politician. “
“Jones was a veteran of the Civil war. He was a member of the 33rd Ohio Infantry, and his legs were riddled with shot at the battle of Perryville. He attended the reunion of the 56th Regiment here a few weeks ago and left immediately for Brown county. He had been visiting nearly all summer, spending part of the time with relatives at Wilmington and also at Louisville, Kentucky.”
“The remains will be borne directly from the N&W passenger station to his daughter’s home on the West Side. The funeral will take place from the Oldtown church Wednesday afternoon at 2 o’clock, suntime. Interment will be made in the family lot at Williamson’s cemetery.” 1
