Alice Caroline Bivens, daughter of James Monroe Bivens and Bessie M Arthur, was born in Lewis County, Kentucky, on October 14, 1914. She never married and was a shoe worker at the Selby Shoe factory in Portsmouth, Ohio. She died of a sudden heart attack caused by the accidental poisoning by Black Leaf 40, a nicotine-based pesticide on September 4, 1937.

” Miss Alice Carol Bivens, 22, died suddenly at the home of her parents at Quincy Saturday, September 4. A heart attack caused death. Miss Bivens, employed by the Selby Shoe Company the last two years, had been residing with a sister, Mrs. Irene Ehrman of Nauvoo.” 1
“Surviving are the parent’s Mr. and Mrs. James Bivens of Quincy, and the following brothers and sisters; Mrs. Harmon Schuler of Portsmouth; Mrs. Irene Ehrman, Thomas and James of Nauvoo; William at home; Daisy of Portsmouth; Norene, Delores and Cole Frederick at home; and a nephew, James Ehrman. Three brothers, Elwood, Lewis, and Earl preceded her in death.”
