Count Board Removes Head of Infirmary

GC (Christy) Johnson was discharged as superintendent of the county infirmary Monday afternoon by county commissioners, effective Saturday.”

“Mr. Johnson today consulted Attorney Emory F Smith and said he had no comment to make on the discharge until Mr. Smith checked the case.”

“In written discharge papers the commissioners charged Mr. Johnson with ‘inefficiency, discourteous treatment of the public, neglect of duty and political activities.'”

James T Phillips, clerk of the commissioners, said the discharge was based upon 10 affidavits sworn to before Prosecutor Marvin A Kelly. Some of the complaints, Mr. Phillips said, ere made by residents of the infirmary, who charged serving of unsatisfactory food and mistreatment. Several witnesses made oath that they were solicited by Mr. Johnson to support Republican candidates for county commissioner and the Republican ticket, the clerk said.”

“Mr. Johnson has served as superintendent of the infirmary for 14 years under Republican administrations, taking the office March 1, 1923. Prior to becoming superintendent, Mr. Johnson was a contractor.”

Mrs. Johnson1 is matron of the home. She, too, as well as other employees, are under civil service.”

“Commissioners Frank Bihlman, Frank Kuhn and Ben Schwamberger, Democrats, voted for the discharge.”2
