Report Says Scioto County Infirmary is a “Pretty Old, Run Down House”

“While the detailed reports as to conditions in the poor farms of Ohio, secured by the American Insurance Union through a person investigation made by Mrs. Elizabeth Walling, of Detroit, President of the Board of Regents of the AIU does not show the Scioto County Farm to be in as deplorable a condition as some of the others, criticism is, however, directed against it.”

“Speaking of the situation there the report says:”

“‘This is a pretty old and run down house. A poor old lady lying on a dilapidated bed. No easy chairs at all.'”

“The condition in Scioto were not, however, such as to be included in the book published by the AIU, under the caption, ‘The American Poor-farm and its Inmates,‘ as were Lawrence and a number of others.”

“The reference to the to the Scioto County farm was filed in the office of the Union and shown only on request.”

Only the most aggravated cases are included in the book’ it was said at the office of the insurance company.”1
