“A warrant was issued by Esquire Burton, yesterday, for the apprehension of George W. Coffrin, late Superintendent of the Infirmary, on a complaint lodged by Phillip Smith, one of the inmates, charging him with assault and battery. It is said that while Coffrin was Superintendent, one of the inmates, during the illness that preceded his death, gave Superintendent Coffrin $20 in trust for his sister, who lives in this city. On Wednesday last the sister of the deceased took a notary public to the Infirmary, and obtained affidavits from Philip Smith and Aaron Stockham, ,substantiating the fact of Coffrin’s receiving the money, which it is proper to say, had never been reported to the sister of the deceased nor to the Infirmary Directors by Coffrin.”
“Day before yesterday, Coffrin went to the Infirmary, and, it is charged, made an assault on the helpless old men who had made affidavits to the above statements, and was so violent in seeking to force a retraction on their part that his arrest ensued. The case will be heard today before Esquire Burton at ten o’clock.”1
